Type about:config in the URL bar.
Click “I’ll be careful button”.

Paste gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost into the filter and set it to true.

Past the folowing into the URL bar:

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

Click Yes on the dialogue that pops up.

Make sure network.protocol-handler.external.mailto is set to true.
